The Aquatic Resources Authority of Panama (ARAP) has firmly rejected claims that a Panamanian-flagged vessel was involved in illegal fishing in Argentine waters. In a statement issued Thursday, ARAP clarified that satellite tracking data proves the vessel BAO WIN was operating in Asian waters during the time of the alleged incidents, not off the coast of Argentina.
The confusion arose after Argentine digital media outlets reported that a ship named BAO WIN had been linked to illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. However, an investigation by Panama’s Fishing Control and Monitoring Center (CCSP) revealed that the vessel in question is actually registered under the flag of Tanzania, not Panama.
ARAP emphasized that Panama maintains rigorous monitoring systems for the 8,700 vessels flying its flag, ensuring compliance with international regulations. The authority called for accurate verification of technical information before associating a flag state with illicit activities.
Panama’s government expressed strong rejection of any implication that its vessel was involved, citing solid evidence from official satellite records. This case underscores the importance of proper vessel identification and the role of advanced monitoring in protecting the integrity of flag states.
