Dibu Martínez Hints at Argentina Retirement After World Cup Final Heartbreak

Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez has opened the door to retiring from Argentina’s national team after the World Cup final defeat to Spain. The Aston Villa goalkeeper posted an emotional message on Instagram, saying he will reflect on whether it is time to ‘step aside.’

‘I dreamed we would win it again. I dreamed of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more,’ the 33-year-old wrote. ‘The truth is the pain is difficult to explain. There are many things to reflect on and I have to see how to move forward, and whether it is time to step aside.’

Martínez was Argentina’s standout performer in the final, making 11 saves, but could not prevent Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner. He has been a key figure in Argentina’s recent golden era, winning the 2022 World Cup and two Copa América titles.

Fans and pundits will now wait to see if Martínez decides to continue or bring an end to his international career. The goalkeeper concluded his post: ‘I am so sorry. I truly gave everything I had to help my country and my team-mates.’
