# Beckles Accuses Prime Minister of Rewriting Trinidad and Tobago’s History in Independence Addresses

Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles has strongly criticised Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar over her Independence 2026 messaging, accusing the Prime Minister of promoting partisan politics and presenting what Beckles described as a distorted account of Trinidad and Tobago’s history.

In a statement titled “A Prime Minister Divorced from History,” Beckles condemned what she described as two Independence addresses delivered by the Prime Minister as the country marked its 64th anniversary of Independence on August 31.

Beckles argued that the occasion should have been used to unite citizens around their shared national identity rather than advance political grievances.

She took particular issue with the Prime Minister addressing supporters of the United National Congress before addressing the wider nation, arguing that the distinction between party leadership and the responsibilities of the Office of the Prime Minister should have been maintained.

“On the occasion of our 64th Independence anniversary, the Prime Minister chose to address the UNC before addressing the nation, using a moment that belongs to all citizens to promote a partisan narrative of grievance and division,” Beckles stated.

The Opposition Leader also accused Persad-Bissessar of attempting to rewrite Trinidad and Tobago’s history by presenting the country’s colonial inheritance and post-Independence development through a politically convenient lens.

Beckles argued that any examination of Trinidad and Tobago at the time of Independence must acknowledge the inequalities and social conditions inherited from the colonial period.

At the same time, she rejected what she characterised as an attempt to portray the country’s development following Independence as a partisan contest between victims and villains.

“Trinidad and Tobago’s journey to Independence, and our development thereafter, cannot be reduced to a politically convenient version of history that serves whichever audience she is addressing,” Beckles said.

According to the Opposition Leader, the country’s history is considerably more complex and should not be reshaped to support contemporary political narratives.

Beckles also brought the legacy of Dr Eric Williams into the dispute.

Williams, who led Trinidad and Tobago into Independence from Britain in 1962 and became the country’s first Prime Minister, remains one of the central figures in the nation’s political history.

Beckles accused the Prime Minister of appearing unwilling to properly acknowledge Williams’ historical position and argued that this was reflected in what she considered a distorted account of the country’s Independence story.

“Our history is more substantial than that, and our nation deserves better,” Beckles said.

She concluded her statement with a direct criticism of Persad-Bissessar’s leadership, declaring: “A Prime Minister who cannot speak honestly about our history cannot credibly lead the nation forward.”

The intervention by the Opposition Leader adds a political dimension to Trinidad and Tobago’s 64th Independence anniversary, with the interpretation of the country’s colonial past, Independence and post-1962 development becoming part of the continuing debate between the Government and Opposition.
