The People’s National Movement has raised concerns over hiring practices at the Water and Sewerage Authority, alleging that nepotism and questionable contract arrangements may be taking place within the state agency. The claims have been strongly denied by the Ministry of Public Utilities, which described the accusations as politically motivated.
PNM Senator and Opposition Chief Whip Marvin Gonzales accused WASA of facilitating employment opportunities under questionable circumstances, including the hiring of individuals allegedly linked to political activity. Gonzales claimed that some appointments appeared to be based on political affiliation rather than qualifications and argued that the practice could cost taxpayers millions annually.
In response, the Ministry of Public Utilities rejected the allegations and defended the recruitment procedures at WASA. The Minister stated that all employees were processed through the authority’s established Human Resource systems and that proper vetting procedures were followed before appointments were made.
The minister also emphasized that the Ministry does not manage the day to day operations of WASA, including hiring decisions. According to the statement, the authority’s management and Human Resource department are responsible for recruitment matters and ensuring that candidates meet the required standards.
The exchange has added to growing political tensions between the governing United National Congress administration and the Opposition PNM, with both sides accusing each other of mismanagement and political interference in state affairs.
The controversy surrounding WASA’s hiring practices is expected to remain a topic of public discussion as calls continue for transparency and accountability within state agencies. Officials from the Ministry of Public Utilities have maintained that the recruitment process at WASA remains compliant with established procedures and regulations.
