Europol’s Internet Content Reporting Unit (EU IRU), in cooperation with Spanish authorities, carried out an operation targeting online gaming communities that were found to promote violent extremist ideologies and terrorism. According to Europol, the material identified on social‑media and gaming platforms promoted jihadist extremism, far‑right, far‑left and anarchist ideologies, as well as terrorism. Investigators discovered communities in which users recreated the structures, symbols and narratives of terrorist organisations and the attacks they had carried out. Activities included role‑playing members of terrorist groups and reenacting violent events. Europol warned that such activities can serve as mechanisms for producing and distributing propaganda, and for recruiting new members, including young people and minors. “By integrating terrorist or violent extremist ideologies into interactive gaming experiences, these communities contribute to radicalisation,” the agency said. The operation is a continuation of a similar effort carried out in 2025 and is part of Europol’s broader programme to identify and report terrorist and extremist propaganda on the internet.
