The State Police of Latvia have concluded their investigation into a fatal traffic accident that occurred on May 22 in the Mersrags parish of the Talsi region. The case file has been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for the initiation of criminal proceedings.

According to police reports, the incident took place at approximately 11:20 a.m. on the Stende-Lauciene-Mersrags road. A 1961-born male driving a Peugeot Partner vehicle was traveling from Kipatciems toward Mersrags when he attempted to overtake a young cyclist traveling in the same direction. During the maneuver, the driver struck the bicycle. Investigators determined that the driver failed to ensure road safety and did not maintain a sufficient interval between his vehicle and the cyclist.

The young cyclist sustained severe injuries in the collision and was transported to a medical facility, where he died the following day, May 23. Alcohol tests conducted by police at the scene confirmed that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

The driver, who has no prior criminal record, has been granted the status of a suspect. Authorities stated that the driver violated several traffic regulations, including the duty to protect vulnerable road users and the requirement to ensure safety before performing maneuvers.

Under the Criminal Law of Latvia, causing a fatal traffic accident can result in a prison sentence of up to eight years and the revocation of driving privileges for up to five years. The final sentencing will be determined by a court. The State Police emphasized that all individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the law.
