Indian equity markets closed marginally higher on Thursday, September 10, 2026, with the benchmark indices recording modest gains despite a rise in Brent crude oil prices to around USD 102 per barrel.
The Nifty 50 finished the session at 23,477.80, up 46.30 points or 0.20 percent. The BSE Sensex ended at 74,902.59, gaining 138.36 points or 0.19 percent.
Market volatility was heightened by the expiry of key monthly derivative contracts, and investors monitored movements in crude oil prices, the rupee, and domestic bond yields. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, noted that higher crude prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions have reinforced concerns over energy‑led inflation, strengthening the prospect of synchronized monetary tightening. He added that rising global bond yields and potential unwinding of the yen carry trade could keep capital flows into emerging markets under pressure.
Sector performance varied. The Nifty Metal index fell 0.65 percent, Nifty Pharma declined 0.51 percent, Nifty Auto dropped 0.41 percent, Nifty FMCG slipped 0.27 percent, and Nifty IT fell 0.08 percent. In contrast, Nifty Media rose 0.55 percent, Nifty PSU Bank gained 0.39 percent, and Nifty Private Bank advanced 0.34 percent.
In commodities, 24‑carat gold prices remained largely flat at Rs 1,53,612 per 10 grams, while silver fell more than 1 percent to Rs 2,41,134 per kilogram. The Indian rupee traded at Rs 95.44 against the U.S. dollar.
Asian markets were under pressure during the session. Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed down 0.27 percent at 64,966. Singapore’s Straits Times Index fell 0.70 percent to 5,689. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index declined 1.48 percent to 24,906. Taiwan’s Weighted Index dropped 0.52 percent to 46,940, and South Korea’s KOSPI fell 0.25 percent to 7,033.
Overall, the Indian markets managed to eke out gains amid a backdrop of rising crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions, and inflationary concerns.
