Newsday Closes After 32 Years as Liquidation Process Begins
After 32 years in operation, Newsday has officially closed, publishing its final online edition yesterday following the commencement of liquidation proceedings.
The closure was confirmed during a staff meeting led by newly appointed liquidator Maria Daniel, where employees were informed that the company had ceased operations with immediate effect. Staff were told they were no longer required to report to work while the winding-up process continues, though employees will remain on the payroll until the end of the month.
Speaking to Guardian Media, several staff members said the announcement brought a sense of relief after weeks of uncertainty surrounding the company’s future. While the decision was described as “bittersweet,” employees said having clarity helped bring an end to prolonged anxiety.
“I’m sad to see it end, but at least now we know,” one staff member said.
Following the announcement, Newsday employees gathered for a final evening together, reflecting on years of shared work, friendships and memories formed in the newsroom.
The closure follows a High Court ruling on January 23, when Judge Marissa Robertson approved an application by attorneys representing Daily News Ltd, Newsday’s parent company, to wind up its operations. The company cited persistent financial challenges, including declining advertising revenue and the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing staff, Daniel confirmed that the liquidation process is now underway and that an assessment of the company’s assets has begun.
