New vehicle tint regulations officially came into effect across Guyana, with authorities warning motorists to comply strictly as part of a broader national security strategy.
Under the updated rules, drivers are permitted a 25 percent tint on front side windows and 20 percent on rear windows and the back windscreen. However, the regulations clearly prohibit any tint on the front windscreen, even for individuals holding a tint waiver permit.
The Minister of Home Affairs emphasized that the law must be followed without exception, cautioning citizens against seeking special treatment or exemptions outside the legal framework. Officials say the move is directly linked to the expansion of the country’s “Safe Country” surveillance programme, which relies heavily on CCTV and facial recognition technology.
Authorities explained that excessive tint has been a major obstacle in identifying suspects, as it prevents clear visibility inside vehicles. The government believes the new regulations will significantly enhance crime detection and support ongoing efforts to reduce serious criminal activity.
