New EU Anti-Drug Strategy Could Put Liberia Under Pressure Over Cocaine Seizure

The European Union’s new anti-narcotics strategy is raising the stakes for Liberia as the country investigates a massive cocaine seizure at Roberts International Airport. The EU’s 2026-2030 policy, unveiled amid a European drug crisis, focuses on cooperation with countries along trafficking routes, including West Africa.

Liberia is already under scrutiny after the seizure of $19 million worth of cocaine. Critics and opposition politicians have questioned the pace of the investigation, with some alleging that officials may be shielding traffickers. The government denies these claims.

The EU has committed €289 million in grant financing to Liberia for 2021-2027, supporting agriculture, education, and governance. Trade relations are also significant, with duty-free access under the ‘Everything But Arms’ arrangement. Failure to demonstrate progress against drug trafficking could jeopardize this support.

Analysts say the Boakai administration faces a test: showing institutional strength in the cocaine investigation or risking being seen as a weak link. The outcome will influence whether Liberia is considered a committed partner in combating transnational crime.
