NDMA Issues High Alert as Floods Wreak Havoc in Northern Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a high alert for potential floods across northern Pakistan from July 19 to 23, following heavy rains and a cloudburst in Neelum Valley that triggered devastating flash floods. The deluge has washed away houses and disrupted traffic in the valley, raising fears of widespread damage.

Authorities have warned of flood surges in the Chenab and Jhelum rivers, with urban flooding expected in major cities including Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar. The NDMA advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from flooded areas as the situation develops.

The cloudburst in Neelum Valley, a picturesque region known for its tourism, has caused immediate destruction, with reports of multiple homes damaged and roads blocked. Rescue teams have been deployed, but access remains challenging due to the ongoing rains.

Meteorological officials predict the weather system will persist over the next few days, increasing the risk of further flash floods and landslides in hilly areas. The NDMA has urged local administrations to remain vigilant and coordinate relief efforts promptly.
