NCIC Renews Call for Piarco Airport to Honour Basdeo Panday with Name Change

The National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) has once again raised its voice in support of renaming Piarco International Airport after former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday. The proposal was presented by NCIC President Surujdeo Mangaroo during the organization’s Indian Arrival Day celebrations. Mangaroo praised Panday as a transformative national leader whose enduring contributions to the nation deserve recognition.

Panday, noted for his significant role in Trinidad and Tobago’s development, was instrumental in advancing the recognition of Indian Arrival Day as a national observance. Supporters of the renaming proposal believe that his achievements, including being the first Prime Minister of East Indian descent, warrant such an honour. They also highlight his contributions to national development and his forward-thinking vision for the country.

However, the proposal has not been met without controversy. A number of citizens argue that Piarco International Airport, long a part of the nation’s identity, should retain its existing name. As of now, the airport remains officially known as Piarco International Airport, with the Government yet to make an announcement regarding any plans to rename it.

This latest proposal has thrust Basdeo Panday’s legacy back into the spotlight, igniting a national debate. As the discourse continues, it remains to be seen whether the call for renaming will gather enough momentum to move from discussion to formal consideration.
