Guyana: Shaquawn Alleyne to Learn Sentence for Dover Murder on June 17

The murder case of Shonnette Dover, who was 20 years old at the time of her death, has progressed to its final stage as the High Court prepares to determine the sentence for Shaquawn Alleyne, also known as “IsWe.” Alleyne appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court on Tuesday, where he entered a guilty plea for the murder of Dover, which occurred in 2021. This plea means that the case will not go to trial, and the court will now focus on the sentencing phase.

Sentencing has been scheduled for June 17. Prior to this date, the judge has mandated several reports to assist in the sentencing decision. These reports include a psychiatric evaluation, a probation report, and a report from the Guyana Prison Service regarding Alleyne’s conduct while in custody. The purpose of these reports is to provide the court with a comprehensive understanding of Alleyne’s mental state, personal circumstances, background, and behavior since being remanded.

The prosecution is expected to present any aggravating factors related to the case, while the defense will have the opportunity to introduce mitigating factors in favor of Alleyne. The case gained national attention following the discovery of Dover’s decomposing body on April 30, 2021, in a shallow grave at Alleyne’s residence in Canvas City, Wismar, Linden. She had been reported missing for nearly a month prior to this discovery, and a post-mortem examination revealed that she died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

After the incident, Alleyne fled Guyana and remained outside the country for almost three years before being arrested in Suriname in 2024 and subsequently extradited to Guyana. Additionally, investigators reported that a 15-year-old relative of Dover confessed to assisting Alleyne in burying the body and was charged as an accessory after the fact of murder. With Alleyne’s guilty plea now recorded, the court will focus on determining the appropriate sentence for the crime.
