NCB Merchant Bank (Trinidad and Tobago) Ltd. has verified that a US$2 million cash shipment, seized by Customs and Excise officials at the South Terminal of Piarco International Airport, belongs to the bank. The funds were being transported as part of the bank’s regular operations. CEO Marli A. Creese issued a statement assuring the public that the shipment adhered to all relevant laws, regulations, and industry protocols. The cash was reportedly headed for Miami, Florida, with a scheduled stop in Jamaica when it was intercepted on June 25.
The bank stressed that the transportation of large sums of money is a standard aspect of banking procedures. They asserted that all necessary steps were taken before the shipment left Trinidad and Tobago. The bank is fully cooperating with both local and international authorities as the ongoing investigations into the matter continue.
The seizure initially gained public attention when it was reported that officials discovered the cash inside a white crocus bag, sparking an investigation by Trinidad and Tobago officials. US law enforcement authorities have reportedly been invited to assist, given the international nature of the transport.
Despite the ongoing investigation, NCB Merchant Bank maintains that the shipment was within the law. They have expressed confidence that the facts will vindicate their compliance with all regulatory requirements. To date, there have been no criminal charges announced in relation to the seizure.
