Trinidad-Born U.S. Soldier Remembered as Mother Speaks Through Tears

The mother of Trinidad-born U.S. Army Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad has paid an emotional tribute to her daughter, describing her as a devoted soldier who proudly served the country she called home.

Fighting back tears during a news conference outside the family’s Queens, New York home, Carol Acevedo said she was immensely proud of her first-born daughter, who was among four U.S. service members killed during recent attacks linked to the conflict with Iran.

“My daughter was a good soldier. She fought for this country, and she died for this country, and I, as a mother, am highly proud of her,” Acevedo said.

Rampersad, 28, who was born in Trinidad before moving to the United States, was initially reported missing after an Iranian missile attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. The U.S. military later confirmed she was believed to have been killed in the attack. She served with the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment based in Germany.

Family members remembered her as a compassionate and courageous woman who always wanted to serve. In a statement, they described her as a “gentle giant” who stood up for those who could not defend themselves and loved her family fiercely. Community leaders in Queens also praised her commitment to service and sacrifice, with plans announced for a public vigil in her honour.

Rampersad earned several military honours during her career, including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. She is survived by her parents, sister and wife.

Her death has resonated deeply in both the United States and Trinidad and Tobago, where many have expressed condolences to her family while reflecting on her service and ultimate sacrifice.
