Miguel Mumbere Masaïsaï, a 23-year-old cyclist from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, died in a road accident on September 18, 2024. The incident occurred in Kabos, located in the northern region of the Republic of the Congo.
Mumbere Masaïsaï was on a long-distance cycling journey intended to advocate for peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to reports, the cyclist had been traveling for 75 days toward Rabat, Morocco, with plans to traverse 17 countries. Following a mechanical failure with his bicycle, he had boarded a bush taxi to reach a nearby town. The taxi was subsequently struck by a logging truck, resulting in the deaths of all passengers on board.
The cyclist was known for his previous efforts to promote peace, including a 2025 journey from his hometown of Goma to Cape Town, South Africa. Following his death, members of the cycling community in Kinshasa held a memorial ride on September 20 to honor his contributions. Reports indicate that associates of Mumbere Masaïsaï have expressed intentions to continue his journey toward Rabat to maintain the cause he championed.
