Mid-Air Collision Leaves One Pilot Dead in Sydney

A tragic incident unfolded in Sydney, Australia on December 1 when two light aircraft collided mid-air during a formation flight over Napper Field, Wedderburn, resulting in the death of one pilot. The two Van’s RV-7 light aircraft were part of a four-plane formation when the collision occurred around 11:50 a.m. While one aircraft was able to land safely post-collision, the other tragically crashed into nearby bushland, where the pilot was found dead. Witnesses from the NSW Sport Aircraft Club, where the group regularly practiced formation flying, described the weather conditions at the time of the incident as ‘pretty choppy’. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has initiated an investigation into the incident, with teams dispatched to map out the crash site, analyze the wreckage and interview the other pilots and witnesses. The investigation team is also gathering flight data, air traffic recordings and weather information to determine the cause of the tragic collision.
