Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados made a historic visit to Guyana to commemorate its 60th Independence Day. In her address, she underscored the importance of regional integration and introduced the use of Trident ID cards for travelers between the two countries. This initiative symbolizes a significant step towards easing travel restrictions within the Caribbean region.
Mottley referenced a poignant speech given by the former Prime Minister of Barbados, Errol Barrow, at a CARICOM meeting 40 years ago, urging collaboration among Caribbean nations to enhance the lived reality of citizens. She asserted that the Trident ID initiative represents a valuable gift to citizens of both nations, allowing for more accessible travel without the need for a passport.
Looking ahead, Mottley expressed her hope that other CARICOM countries would participate in expanding citizen privileges, aiming for a united Caribbean where citizens can move freely for visits and connections. She concluded her visit by extending her congratulations to Guyana on its independence, as both nations prepare to celebrate their 60th anniversaries.
