Barbados is set to host the Inter-American Development Bank’s Sustainability Week in 2026, a critical event for small island developing states. Minister of Finance Ryan Straughn emphasized the importance of this occasion as it addresses the unique financial needs and challenges faced by these regions. With participation from the private sector across Latin America and beyond, the focus will be on creating solutions that not only benefit Barbados but also extend to the wider Caribbean.
Straughn noted that in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative to establish and pursue targeted development goals that reflect the pressing socio-economic realities. This event aims to foster discussions around necessary reforms to the international financial architecture, emphasizing environmental sustainability and social inclusion.
Additionally, the Minister highlighted the objective of aligning financial resources with meaningful projects to uplift marginalized communities. He stated that a society’s strength is measured by how it supports its most vulnerable citizens, underscoring the event’s relevance in addressing inequality and fostering growth.
