Mayor urges Government to pay outstanding wages owed to NPUPS workers

Diego Martin Mayor Akeliah Glasgow-Warner is calling on the Government to urgently settle outstanding wages allegedly owed to workers under the National Programme for the Upkeep of Public Spaces (NPUPS). In a public appeal directed to Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen, Glasgow-Warner claimed some workers are still owed between three and four fortnights of wages following the end of their employment under the programme. “Please pay the NPUPS workers before the 21st of September,” Glasgow-Warner said. She claimed the workers continued reporting for duty despite not receiving their salaries, including during the school vacation when parents faced expenses for books, uniforms and other school supplies. Glasgow-Warner said the situation became even more difficult as schools reopened and the workers’ employment came to an end while some allegedly remained unpaid for several fortnights. The mayor also claimed that if the outstanding payments are not processed before September 21, affected workers could face a longer wait while the national budget is read and passed. She appealed directly to Ameen and the Minister of Finance to intervene and ensure the workers receive the money allegedly owed to them. Glasgow-Warner’s statements represent her account of the situation. The number of affected workers, the exact amount of outstanding wages and the consequences of the September 21 date have not been independently verified.
