A man identified as Akhem Cabarr was shot and later arrested following a heated foot chase through Leau Place in Port of Spain, Trinidad on Wednesday evening. The incident, which occurred around 6:40 p.m. on April 8, 2026, began when Acting Corporal Hall and a team of officers arrived at a three-storey residence based on information related to Cabarr’s arrest under a Preventive Detention Order.
Upon arrival, officers spotted Cabarr on the top floor of the building. The chase was triggered when Cabarr noticed the police and fled inside the house, subsequently exiting through the back door. During the pursuit, Cabarr was seen holding what appeared to be a black firearm.
In a dramatic turn of events, Cabarr jumped from a third-floor railing into a bushy area in a neighbouring yard in an attempt to escape. However, when he turned towards the officers with the firearm in his hand, an officer discharged two rounds from a service pistol. Despite sustaining a gunshot wound to his right ankle, Cabarr continued running before he was eventually subdued on the roadway.
Following the incident, Cabarr was transported to the Port of Spain General Hospital for medical treatment. A subsequent search of the area for the firearm proved unsuccessful. As of now, investigations into the incident are ongoing.
