Luke James-Trim: Tobago’s Youth Advocate Amplifying Island’s Voice Globally

Luke James-Trim is not your average 22-year-old. Born and bred in Mt. St. George, Tobago, he moved to Trinidad in 2023 for his law studies. But his journey took an unexpected turn when he took on the role of a CARICOM Youth Ambassador, a position he secured after topping the national score in the selection process.

James-Trim’s ambassadorial role provided him a platform at regional policy discussions, youth consultations, and international forums. However, he did more than just participate; he actively highlighted issues plaguing his home island, Tobago. From youth development and climate vulnerability to economic challenges and the struggles faced by Tobagonians studying and working away from home, he presented a comprehensive view of the island’s concerns.

His advocacy extended beyond local and regional forums, leading him to engage with policymakers, CARICOM officials, and United Nations representatives at international events. One of his most notable efforts is his advocacy for Tobagonian students in Trinidad, which led to the establishment of the Tobago Students’ Association.

While his growing profile might suggest a political ambition, James-Trim insists his focus remains on advocacy. His mission is to promote Tobago’s interests and foster greater youth involvement in national and regional development. The journey hasn’t been without its challenges, but his faith and commitment to service have kept him on course.

Luke James-Trim’s story is a testament to the power of advocacy. From Trinidad’s lecture halls to international policy discussions, he has carried Tobago’s voice into rooms it would not have reached otherwise. And that’s worth celebrating.
