President Irfaan Ali and Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh recently engaged with Adam Stewart, the Executive Chairman of Jamaica-based Sandals Resorts International, to explore the possibility of establishing an eco-tourism hotel in Guyana. During their discussions, they highlighted that the private sector in Guyana is prepared to invest an initial amount of US$15 million in this venture.
President Ali emphasized the potential benefits for the Sandals brand, suggesting that partnering with Guyana’s private sector could lead to the creation of a premier eco-destination and all-inclusive resort in the country. He stated, “You will be doing your brand a great disservice if you don’t have the bold capacity that I know your brand carries to make the best possible investment decision Sandals has ever made.” He expressed confidence that such a project would be unmatched in the region.
Adam Stewart acknowledged the discussions about entering the hospitality sector, indicating that while he was initially in Guyana for a different purpose, he is open to the idea of building a hotel in the country. He remarked, “As I arrived here, we were here to sell cars, but the president reminded me that one of these days we need to build a hotel down here, and I want to follow suit… That’s not a public service announcement just yet. It’s a ‘we love the idea of it.’”
Dr. Ali noted that he had previously discussed the potential for Sandals to invest in Guyana’s hotel sector about a year ago. He also mentioned that over 14 hotels have already been constructed by the private sector in Guyana, indicating a growing interest in the hospitality industry.
