Keeping the Bridges Open

Russian drone attacks on Kyiv are increasingly disrupting the city’s infrastructure, specifically impacting the transit routes across the Dnipro River that connect the capital’s left and right banks. During recent air raid alerts, Kyiv’s metro system has suspended service across the river, complicating daily commutes for the approximately four million residents divided between the two sides.

A recent incident on Mykola Bazhan Avenue saw a Russian drone strike a road near a supermarket. While the explosion created a crater and damaged several vehicles, local authorities reported that no fatalities occurred, though several individuals sustained injuries. Emergency services, including police and medical personnel, cleared the site and restored traffic within hours.

The vulnerability of Kyiv’s eight bridges has become a subject of public concern. Denis Yaroslavsky, an officer in the Assault Troops Command, recently suggested that Russia may target these structures to paralyze the capital. Conversely, some security experts have argued that while drones and conventional missiles can damage bridge surfaces, destroying the structural supports would require a level of precision and heavy weaponry that may be difficult for Russian forces to achieve.

The impact of bridge destruction is already visible in other parts of Ukraine. Russia has reportedly damaged or destroyed approximately 350 bridges across the country, including a recent strike on a bridge over the Kazennyi Donets River in Kramatorsk, which officials noted could hinder military logistics near the front line.

Beyond physical infrastructure, there is growing concern regarding the maintenance of social cohesion within Ukraine. As the conflict continues and winter approaches, efforts are being made in various regions to foster community connections. For instance, in the Zhytomyr region, local officials and cultural figures recently organized networking events to bridge gaps between librarians, agricultural workers, and the local business community. These initiatives are viewed by some as essential for maintaining national unity amid the ongoing challenges of the war.
