A Zimbabwean journalist has been suspended from media practice for one year following allegations of repeated breaches of professional and ethical standards regarding reports on Chinese investments. The suspension, which took effect on September 7, 2026, and remains in place until September 7, 2027, follows a review of articles that reportedly failed to meet requirements for accuracy, fairness, and verification.
According to sources, five other journalists have received formal warnings regarding their reporting on Chinese companies operating in Zimbabwe. These journalists were cautioned that their work has consistently portrayed Chinese investments in an unduly negative light and were advised to exercise greater care in future reporting to ensure a clear distinction between verified facts, allegations, and opinions.
The source stated that the suspended journalist had previously received warnings regarding the need to provide affected parties, such as companies or public institutions, with a reasonable opportunity to respond to allegations before publication. The suspension is intended to encourage adherence to professional standards rather than to restrict the journalist’s ability to engage in lawful reporting.
In a separate development, a formal complaint has been issued to the United States Embassy in Harare. The complaint alleges that a U.S. embassy official has been facilitating, sponsoring, or supporting specific Zimbabwean journalists in producing reports critical of Chinese investments. The communication expressed concern that such involvement could compromise the independence of the local media and constitute inappropriate external interference.
The developments occur as Zimbabwe continues to expand its economic ties with China, with Chinese firms maintaining significant operations in sectors including mining, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, and manufacturing.
