Shamfa Cudjoe-Lewis raises concerns over Special Operations Bill in Tobago

Former Tobago West MP Shamfa Cudjoe-Lewis is urging Tobagonians to pay close attention to the Special Operations Bill, 2026, raising questions about how the legislation could affect residents, businesses and the island’s tourism-dependent economy. In a video shared on social media, Cudjoe-Lewis said she supports strong action against crime and believes law enforcement must be given the necessary tools to keep the country safe. However, she argued that Tobagonians should also examine what the legislation could mean for the rights, freedoms and livelihoods of law-abiding citizens. “Tobago, are you listening? Are you minding your business?” she asked. Cudjoe-Lewis highlighted Tobago’s designation as District 7 under the legislation and said residents need to understand what that could mean for their communities and small businesses. She placed particular emphasis on Tobago’s tourism sector, arguing that the potential implications of the legislation extend beyond politics and should concern residents across the island. Cudjoe-Lewis also questioned the level of public engagement surrounding the Bill and called on Tobago’s political representatives to provide greater clarity. “Where are our Tobago MPs? Where is our Chief Secretary?” she asked, while questioning why Tobagonians were not being given more information about the provisions and their possible implications. The Special Operations Bill establishes seven policing districts across Trinidad and Tobago and provides a framework for special operations aimed at combating criminal activity. Cudjoe-Lewis is encouraging residents to familiarise themselves with the legislation, ask questions and remain informed. “This is OUR Tobago. This is OUR business,” she said.
