Investimento chinês na Guiné-Bissau ronda os 60 mil milhões de FCFA, revela estudo da Unipiaget

According to a study released by the University Jean Piaget of Guinea‑Bissau (Unipiaget), Chinese investment in the country reached approximately 60 billion CFA francs (about 97.58 million U.S. dollars) in 2024, marking a 55.7 percent increase over the previous year.

The research, presented on 8 September 2026 in the university’s amphitheatre, was attended by the institution’s rector, Aladje Baldé, representatives of the Chinese Embassy in Guinea‑Bissau, and students. It was conducted by the Advanced Research and Sustainable Development Promotion Center (CAI) and the International Research and Development Division of African Agribusiness (DIIDAA), both part of the university’s Group for Research and Extension in Economics and Management (GEPE).

The study, titled “Investment and Cooperation Belt and Road China‑Africa,” also involved scientific collaboration with the Marxist Research Center at Fuzhou University in China’s Fujian province. It outlines a favorable outlook for Chinese investment in sectors such as mining, oil, transport, housing, sanitation, and fisheries.

Unipiaget researchers identified 168 Chinese companies registered in Guinea‑Bissau, primarily operating in fisheries, mining, trade, and civil construction. They also highlighted 26 value chains with potential for Belt and Road investment, including cashew processing, aquaculture, and tourism infrastructure.

Authors note that Guinea‑Bissau’s membership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), and the African Union expands market access for investors. However, they caution that realizing these opportunities requires improved infrastructure, skilled human resources, innovation, and institutional stability.

The study recommends that Chinese private investors focus on productive, sustainable, and long‑term projects, while encouraging Guinean entrepreneurs to strengthen partnerships, participate in business events, and enhance negotiation skills with Chinese firms. It also suggests that Chinese investors view Guinea‑Bissau as a gateway to broader African markets and urges national authorities to facilitate foreign investment, reinforce legal security, and promote Guinean products in China.

In a statement to the press, research team coordinator Ansu Mancal emphasized the Belt and Road Initiative’s importance for Guinea‑Bissau’s economic development, noting that the mechanism creates favorable conditions for mobilizing both public and private Chinese investment. He also acknowledged ongoing challenges in showcasing the country’s economic potential to the Chinese market and called for stronger partnerships with Beijing to increase visibility and unlock new business opportunities.
