A unique attraction in Tobago is giving visitors far more than a horseback ride. Healing With Horses, based in Buccoo, combines horse experiences, nature and community programmes designed to promote wellness, confidence and emotional connection.
Founded in 2010 by Veronika Danzer-LaFortune and her husband Lennon LaFortune, the non-profit organisation began with the rescue of a single horse. Over the years, it has grown into a sanctuary that serves children, families and people with disabilities through horse-assisted activities and community programmes.
Today, the foundation offers several experiences, including guided interactions with horses, beach rides, horse swims, nature walks and educational programmes. According to the organisation, it has spent more than 17 years working with children and adults, particularly those with special needs, while also providing environmental and creative programmes for the wider community.
The organisation says its rescue horses are selected and cared for to provide calm, gentle interactions that encourage confidence, trust and emotional wellbeing. Sessions focus not only on riding but also on grooming, leading and simply spending time with the animals.
Research into equine-assisted therapy suggests that structured interactions with horses may help improve confidence, emotional regulation and social skills for some participants. Experts note that horses are highly responsive to human behaviour and body language, making them valuable partners in therapeutic settings. However, equine-assisted therapy is generally regarded as a complementary approach rather than a replacement for medical or psychological treatment.
Healing With Horses has also become a volunteer destination, welcoming local and international participants who assist with horse care, environmental projects and programmes for persons with disabilities.
For many visitors, the opportunity to walk or swim with horses along Tobago’s coastline has become one of the island’s most memorable experiences, blending tourism with a mission centred on rescue, inclusion and community wellbeing.
