Haryana Police Use Barricades, Spikes to Stop Punjab Farmers Heading to Anti-Trade Deal Rally

Haryana police on [date] blocked a group of farmers from Punjab at the Shambhu border as they attempted to travel to Delhi for a Kisan Mahapanchayat protesting the proposed India-US trade deal. Police erected barricades, concrete blocks, and iron spikes, reminiscent of the ‘Delhi Chalo 2′ protests in February 2024, to prevent the farmers from entering Haryana.

Farmers’ organizations condemned the action, calling it a denial of their constitutional right to peacefully assemble. BKU Shaheed Bhagat Singh leader Tejveer Singh criticized the Haryana government for remaining silent on the issue.

The protest, organized by ‘Desh Bachao Morcha’, draws farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. They demand that the central government abandon the trade deal, arguing it would adversely affect agriculture, dairy, industry, and digital trade. They also demand that the government release details of the negotiations and consult stakeholders before signing.

While the Punjab contingent was stopped, farmers from Ambala and Kurukshetra districts in Haryana continued their journey to Delhi. The situation remains tense at the border.
