Guyana: WIN Leader Responds to Allegations from PNCR Leader

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has responded to claims made by PNCR Leader Aubrey Norton, asserting that Norton is using his name to maintain political relevance. Mohamed dismissed the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Mohamed addressed Norton’s assertion that he entered politics to avoid extradition to the United States. He characterized the claim as false and unsupported by the sequence of events. Mohamed suggested that Norton should focus on addressing internal challenges within the PNCR instead of targeting him and the WIN Movement.

According to Mohamed, there is a growing disillusionment among the public regarding the PNCR, and he questioned Norton’s effectiveness as Leader of the Opposition. He claimed that, with the backing of the WIN Movement, he has achieved more in one year than Norton did during his time in the same role.

Mohamed emphasized that his motivation for entering politics was to serve the Guyanese people, not to evade legal issues abroad. He noted that his public service began prior to the formal launch of the WIN Movement, highlighting humanitarian and charitable efforts conducted on Guyana’s Independence Day in May 2025.

He stated that the encouragement from ordinary Guyanese inspired him to seek elected office. In response to Norton’s allegations, Mohamed maintained that the timeline does not support the claim that he entered politics to avoid extradition, asserting that any legal pressure against him intensified only after he became politically active.

Furthermore, he alleged that President Irfaan Ali, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, and Attorney General Anil Nandlall had previously warned him against pursuing a political career and threatened to apply pressure if he did so. Mohamed claimed that since the inception of his political movement, he has faced ongoing attacks aimed at damaging his personal reputation and business interests.

He also rejected the notion that holding political office could protect him from extradition proceedings, stating that serving as Opposition Leader does not exempt anyone from extradition if legal requirements are met. Mohamed described Norton’s argument as baseless and reiterated his commitment to representing the interests of Guyanese citizens, strengthening the WIN Movement, and preparing for upcoming elections.

This exchange highlights ongoing tensions between two opposition figures amid broader discussions about opposition unity, political credibility, and the future of anti-PPP/C efforts.
