Amanza Walton-Desir, leader of the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) and Member of Parliament, has not been appointed to any parliamentary committee under the 13th Parliament, according to the official list of committee memberships released by the National Assembly. The appointments indicate that opposition positions on various standing, sectoral, and special committees were assigned to members of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party.
Walton-Desir’s exclusion comes despite earlier indications that she would be included in the opposition’s committee structure following the election of WIN leader Azruddin Mohamed as Opposition Leader in January 2026. At that time, Mohamed acknowledged Walton-Desir’s support during his successful bid for the position and indicated that his approach to parliamentary representation would involve broader participation from opposition members.
Previously, Walton-Desir was identified as a potential candidate to chair the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Foreign Relations, given her background and previous involvement in parliamentary matters. However, the finalized committee appointments reveal that she was not selected to serve on any of the National Assembly’s committees, including key bodies such as the Public Accounts Committee, the Parliamentary Management Committee, and the Committee on Appointments.
Parliamentary committees play a significant role in examining legislation, reviewing government spending, and conducting oversight on behalf of the National Assembly. The absence of FGM representation on any parliamentary committee has raised questions about the party’s role within the opposition structure and how committee positions were allocated among opposition members. As of the time of publication, neither Walton-Desir nor the Forward Guyana Movement has publicly commented on the committee appointments.
