Former UNC MP Criticises Government and Party, Calls for Stronger Democratic Accountability

Anita Haynes-Alleyne, a former Member of Parliament for the United National Congress (UNC), has openly criticised both the Government and her former party. She warns that the current state of leadership in Trinidad and Tobago is absent, and those in power are supported by ‘sycophantic underlings’. The former MP implores citizens to voice their concerns when they believe that governance is taking a wrong turn.

According to Haynes-Alleyne, the issues raised during internal party elections in the past are now manifesting on a national scale. She argues that an atmosphere of unquestioning compliance and political bullying has infiltrated the government. This comes after she has been increasingly critical of party politics since her departure from active involvement following the General Election in 2025.

Haynes-Alleyne is calling for a stronger democratic accountability mechanism. She advocates for a leadership style that welcomes scrutiny, rather than one that punishes dissent. In her view, disagreement should not be misconstrued as disloyalty.

She observes that an increasing number of citizens are openly questioning the direction the country is heading in. She believes that this principled dissent is not only necessary, but crucial for the health of a democracy.
