Guyana: Search Ongoing for Missing Couple at Unity Beach

Authorities and local residents are actively searching for two individuals from Victoria Village who went missing while swimming at Unity Beach, located on the East Coast of Demerara. The missing persons have been identified as 20-year-old Lyodisa Waldron, also known as “Loyda,” who works as a salesgirl, and 31-year-old Special Constable Andri Francis, referred to as “Bobby.”

The incident reportedly occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Preliminary investigations conducted by the Guyana Police Force indicate that Waldron and Francis were swimming together when Waldron began to drift away from the shore and encountered difficulties. According to reports, she raised an alarm for help as the current began to pull her further out to sea. In an attempt to rescue her, Francis entered the water but both individuals were subsequently overtaken by the strong currents and disappeared beneath the surface.

Immediately after the incident, beachgoers raised an alarm, prompting a search operation in the surrounding area. Police officers and local residents joined forces to search along the shoreline and nearby sections of the beach in hopes of locating the missing pair. As of now, authorities have not disclosed how far offshore the two were when they went missing, but initial assessments suggest that the strong currents played a significant role in the incident.

The disappearance of Waldron and Francis has left their families, friends, and the community of Victoria Village anxiously awaiting updates as the search efforts continue. Unity Beach is a well-frequented recreational spot for many residents of East Coast Demerara, particularly during weekends and holidays. However, this incident has once again highlighted the potential dangers associated with strong currents along certain areas of the coastline.

Search efforts are ongoing.
