Guyana: Retrial Ends with 35-Year Sentence for GPHC Dispatcher’s Killer

Allan Sims has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for the murder of Melissa Skeete, a dispatcher at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. This sentence was issued by Justice Sandil Kissoon, concluding a lengthy legal process that included multiple trials and appeals. The sentence will take effect from the date Sims was remanded in 2015, and he will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.

Sims was initially convicted of murder in 2020, but he successfully appealed that conviction, leading to a retrial ordered by the Court of Appeal. The court proceedings revealed that Sims and Skeete had a prior relationship. Evidence presented during the trial indicated that Skeete had just finished her shift when she entered a vehicle driven by Sims. Prosecutors alleged that she was subsequently attacked and stabbed multiple times.

Medical evidence confirmed that Skeete sustained eight stab wounds, including a critical injury to her chest that penetrated her lungs. Despite her injuries, she managed to escape from the vehicle and ran a short distance along Carmichael Street before collapsing. She later succumbed to her wounds.

The prosecution also introduced evidence suggesting a history of abuse and threats from Sims towards Skeete and her family. Testimonies indicated that Sims had previously threatened them before the fatal incident. Investigators found evidence indicating attempts to conceal the crime, including a bloodstained vehicle seat that had been removed and replaced, along with dampness beneath the replacement seat.

While Sims denied the charges, the prosecution presented forensic evidence and witness testimonies that supported their case. This sentencing marks the conclusion of a protracted murder case that has been ongoing since Skeete’s death in 2015, representing a significant moment for her family and the legal system in Guyana.
