Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles has demanded the dismissal of all three housing ministers and the HDC Board. This comes in the wake of the HDC’s cancellation of procurement proceedings involving $3.4 billion contracts. These contracts had been allegedly awarded to favoured UNC contractors, including reputed elite financiers and newly incorporated companies with no prior experience in housing.
The announcement was shrouded in confusion, leaving the general population oblivious due to the HDC’s cryptic communication. This move is widely seen as an admission of the inappropriate and scandalous award of state contracts.
The Opposition has decried the apparent favoritism, accusing elite UNC financiers of profiting amidst a national financial crisis. Moreover, it criticizes the Government’s failings in addressing the housing issue, a topic conspicuously absent during recent lengthy parliamentary proceedings.
Ministers David Lee, Phillip Alexander, and Anil Roberts are under fire for their lack of substantial contributions to the housing sector. Instead, they are accused of engaging in divisive rhetoric and failing to act responsibly on the HDC board. The Opposition remains determined to hold the UNC accountable and to combat their alleged corruption.
