Three hundred pregnant Brazilian cows are currently being transported to the Ebini research station in East Berbice, Guyana. The Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA), Dr. Dwight Walrond, reported that the journey is proceeding as scheduled, although there were some delays at two river crossings.
Dr. Walrond stated that some of the cows have already arrived at the research station, and the remaining animals are expected to reach their destination by 2 PM Guyana Time. He noted that the arrival at the waterfront was in line with the projected schedule, aside from an overnight delay caused by tidal conditions that affected the pontoon crossing over the Berbice River. To ensure safety, the crossing was postponed until daylight.
He explained that moving the animals at night poses risks not only to the cows but also to the staff involved in the transport. Additionally, there was an extra hour of waiting at the Kurupukari crossing on the Essequibo River to accommodate all the animals. While there have been reports of mortality among the cows, the exact number and cause of death will be determined after post-mortem examinations.
Some parliamentarians who visited the transport area expressed concerns about the condition of the cows, noting that many appeared thin and stressed. Dr. Campbell remarked on the challenges of transporting pregnant animals, while Mr. Andrews raised questions about the preparation for the journey.
In response, Dr. Walrond assured that the heifers are receiving water, electrolytes, food, and medicine at regular intervals during the journey. After undergoing quarantine and inspections in Brazil, a GLDA team is escorting the animals with necessary supplies.
The government is purchasing a total of 1,000 pregnant heifers from Brazil at a cost of GY$245 million to enhance beef and dairy production in Guyana. This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to developing a modern livestock industry, increasing local production, and improving food security.
