More than 1,400 rice farmers in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) received over $862 million in relief grants on Friday. This distribution is part of the Government’s ongoing $3 billion rice farmer support program. The event took place at the Bush Lot Secondary School in Corentyne, where Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha oversaw the process of handing out cheques to the farmers.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to provide financial assistance to the agricultural sector, particularly focusing on rice farmers who have faced various challenges. The support program aims to bolster the livelihoods of those involved in rice production and enhance the overall stability of the agricultural economy in the region.
Farmers expressed gratitude for the assistance, which is expected to help them manage operational costs and improve their farming practices. The government has emphasized its commitment to supporting the agricultural sector, recognizing its importance to the country’s economy and food security.
The distribution of these grants is a significant step in ensuring that farmers have the necessary resources to continue their work and contribute to the local and national economy. The program reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to address the needs of the agricultural community and promote sustainable farming practices.
