Guyana: One in Custody After 17-Year-Old Dies in Croal Street Incident

Police are investigating the death of a 17-year-old boy who was allegedly stabbed during an incident involving a pair of scissors near the Route 40 Minibus Park on Croal Street, Georgetown. The deceased has been identified as Keroy Profit from Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara.

The incident reportedly occurred around 18:00h on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. Preliminary investigations indicate that Profit and another 17-year-old male, who were known to each other, were part of a group of students when they allegedly engaged in horseplay. During this interaction, the other teenager, who was said to be armed with a pair of scissors, allegedly stabbed Profit in the neck.

Following the incident, the injured teenager was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment. His body has since been moved to the hospital mortuary and is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Authorities have reviewed and extracted CCTV footage from the area as part of the ongoing investigation. Several individuals have also been questioned in connection with the incident.

The suspect, a 17-year-old from Cummings Park, “E” Field, Sophia, has been arrested and is currently in custody. Investigations into the matter are continuing.
