During the 60th Independence Anniversary celebration of Guyana on Fort Island, Essequibo River, the hoisting of the National Flag encountered difficulties. This event took place shortly after President Irfaan Ali emphasized that Essequibo is part of Guyana. Despite the efforts of the Guyana Defence Force soldiers, the large Golden Arrowhead flag could not be raised above half-staff. For over 30 minutes, various officials, including President Ali, Prime Minister Mark Phillips, and heads of the disciplined forces, observed as soldiers attempted to resolve the issue of a tangled halyard.
When it became clear that the problem could not be quickly fixed, a shorter substitute flagpole was utilized. At 12:43 AM, a smaller version of the National Flag was successfully hoisted, followed by a fireworks display that illuminated the area around Fort Island, located nearly 10 miles from the mouth of the Essequibo River.
In his address, President Ali reiterated Guyana’s stance regarding its territorial integrity, specifically addressing Venezuela’s claims. He stated that Venezuela has not adhered to binding orders from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning the land boundary established by the 1899 Arbitral Tribunal Award. President Ali expressed confidence in Guyana’s position and affirmed the country’s commitment to defending its sovereignty against any threats.
He acknowledged the support from various international entities, including the United States, CARICOM, the Commonwealth, and the Organisation of American States, in affirming Guyana’s territorial claims. The President concluded by asserting that Essequibo has been and will remain an integral part of Guyana.
