Guyana: National Child Protection Awareness and Prevention Campaign Launched in Guyana

A campaign has been launched in Guyana to enhance public awareness regarding child safety and to promote early reporting of abuse. This initiative, titled “SEE. SAY. SAFE.”, is a collaboration between the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Rights of the Child Commission (RCC), and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The campaign aims to provide both children and adults with the necessary knowledge to identify and respond to unsafe situations, while also focusing on the prevention of child sexual abuse. It will utilize various platforms, including radio, television, social media, schools, and community outreach programs to reach families across the country.

Ms. Aleema Nasir, Chairperson of the RCC, stated that many children who experience harm often do not disclose it due to fear or uncertainty. The campaign seeks to create an environment where children feel safe to speak up, and adults are prepared to listen and take appropriate action.

Over the next few months, the campaign will emphasize helping adults recognize signs of abuse and adopt protective practices to ensure children’s safety. It will also educate children about safe and unsafe behaviors, address stigma surrounding disclosure, and promote accessible reporting pathways.

Dr. Loria-Mae Heywood, UNICEF Child Protection Specialist in Guyana, highlighted the importance of informed families and communities in enhancing child safety. Mrs. Teshana Lake, Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, stressed the need for prompt reporting of abuse to preserve evidence and provide timely support to survivors.

The public will be invited to participate in an anonymous online survey to assess awareness levels and improve child protection services. Stakeholders encourage everyone to be vigilant for signs of abuse, listen to children, and report concerns to appropriate authorities, such as the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) or local police stations.

The RCC Chairperson emphasized that protecting children is a collective responsibility, stating, “When we see, when we speak up, we help to keep children safe.”
