Guyana: More AK-47 Assault Rifles Seized, Venezuelan Arrested in Guyana

Police and agents from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) in Guyana have conducted an operation that resulted in the seizure of twenty-three AK-47 assault rifles and 504 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition. This operation occurred in the vicinity of the Guyana-Venezuela border, where authorities acted on intelligence regarding illegal arms trafficking.

During the operation, a Venezuelan national was arrested in connection with the seized weapons. However, the authorities have not disclosed the identity of the individual or specific details regarding the circumstances of the arrest. The firearms and ammunition are believed to be linked to ongoing concerns about illegal arms smuggling in the region, which has raised security issues for both Guyana and its neighboring countries.

The Guyanese government has been actively working to combat illegal arms trafficking and enhance border security in response to rising crime rates and regional instability. The seized weapons will undergo further investigation to determine their origin and intended use. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to address the challenges posed by organized crime and the illicit arms trade in the area.

Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of cooperation and intelligence sharing in tackling these issues, as they seek to improve safety and security for the citizens of Guyana and the surrounding regions.
