Guyana: Kezia Hinds: Championing Positivity and Inclusion Through the Literary Arts

Kezia Liane Hinds, a Guyanese-born author and advocate, is utilizing the literary arts to address racial stereotypes and promote mental wellness. Hinds has released two books: 111 Positive Thoughts: Give Yourself Grace and the children’s story The Ladybug and Spider. Her journey began in Linden, Guyana, where she attended Mackenzie High School and President’s College. Hinds became a familiar face in Guyana as a news reporter and anchor at the National Communications Network (NCN) in Georgetown.

After migrating to Canada, Hinds transitioned her career, earning a Diploma in Media Communications and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from Humber College. She then moved into public service with the Canadian federal government. Her first book, 111 Positive Thoughts: Give Yourself Grace, was inspired by her personal journey toward healing and self-acceptance. Hinds chose the number “111” for its spiritual significance, aiming to help readers reshape their inner dialogue.

Hinds noted that while the book was initially intended for adults, it has resonated with teenagers due to its straightforward language. She emphasized the importance of positive thoughts in combating negative self-talk, especially among young people facing societal pressures.

Her second book, The Ladybug and Spider, addresses themes of bias through a story about an unlikely friendship between two insects. This narrative was inspired by conversations with her son, who faced bullying in Canadian schools. Hinds highlighted the contrasting perceptions of spiders and ladybugs, drawing parallels to societal views on race.

Despite her full-time career, Hinds views her writing as a vital creative outlet and a legacy for future generations. Her works have been integrated into school reading programs in Canada and Guyana, promoting discussions on prejudice and encouraging understanding through storytelling.
