Guyana: Farmer Shoots Venezuelan Construction Worker in Guyana

A farmer in Parika, East Bank Essequibo, shot a 20-year-old Venezuelan construction worker late on Saturday night after hearing a sound at his house door, according to police reports. The incident took place on May 30 at approximately 11:30 p.m.

The injured individual, who resides in Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, sustained two gunshot wounds to his upper right abdomen. Following the incident, he was transported to De Kinderen Hospital located in West Coast Demerara, where he was admitted for treatment.

The 62-year-old farmer involved in the incident reported the shooting to a nearby police station. The Guyana Police Force confirmed that the farmer is a licensed firearm holder. During the investigation, authorities seized the firearm, five live rounds, and two spent shells, which will be held pending further inquiries.

According to police, the farmer was at home when he heard a noise coming from his front door. Upon investigation, he discovered the 20-year-old man under a shed on his property. It was during this encounter that the farmer discharged two rounds, resulting in the injuries sustained by the Venezuelan worker.

Investigators have since collected statements from several individuals who were questioned as part of the ongoing investigation into the shooting incident.
