Guyana: Guyanese Man Admits to Firebombing Incidents in New York City

Yogesh Sayrange, a 36-year-old man from Guyana, has admitted to being involved in a series of Molotov cocktail attacks in New York City. He appeared in federal court on Thursday in relation to the firebombing of a smoke shop on Fulton Street in Brooklyn that occurred on June 25. According to federal prosecutors, Sayrange was living in the United States without legal status after the protections he received upon arriving as a child expired. He reportedly mentioned to investigators that he had a pending application to renew his Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

Prosecutors stated that Sayrange confessed to the attacks, expressing derogatory sentiments towards the targeted groups. Authorities believe he is linked to seven arson incidents since late June, primarily aimed at houses of worship and some commercial establishments. The most recent incidents took place on a Wednesday night in Queens.

Police reported that Sayrange allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at the front door of Iglesia Bautista El Mesias in Ozone Park around 11:35 p.m. Surveillance footage captured him conversing with a group of men outside the church prior to the incident. He reportedly asked them if they wanted the institution to be converted into a mosque. The incendiary device struck the church door and exploded on the ground, causing no damage.

Following this, Sayrange is accused of traveling to a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on 78th Street in Woodhaven, where he allegedly threw another Molotov cocktail, which also failed to cause damage. A third incident was reported at an ambulette company on Rockaway Boulevard in Cypress Hills, where a firebomb landed in the parking lot, prompting a witness to describe hearing a bang and seeing flames.

No injuries were reported in any of the incidents. Sayrange was arrested shortly after, with authorities recovering two additional Molotov cocktails from his bag. When questioned about the unused devices, he allegedly stated, “I had two more in my bag. I was going to finish the job.”
