Guyana: Enact Tighter Transparency Laws or Corruption Allegations Will Worsen, Says Ramkarran

Former People’s Progressive Party (PPP) executive member Ralph Ramkarran has expressed concerns regarding the potential increase in corruption allegations in Guyana if new transparency legislation is not enacted. Ramkarran made these remarks in his column titled “The Farm,” emphasizing the need for measures to enhance transparency and ethical standards in governance.

He noted that the current climate of allegations is not surprising, given the lack of significant steps to address transparency despite increased government spending over the past 14 years. Ramkarran stated, “In the absence of measures, allegations of lack of transparency and standards of ethics will get worse and ensnare others.” He advised President Irfaan Ali and other politicians involved in business activities to ensure adequate legislation is in place for their protection.

President Ali has faced calls to publicly disclose his assets, including details about his farm located on the Long Creek, Linden-Soesdyke Highway. In response, he has stated that his investments in a poultry, livestock, and fish farm were financed through bank loans and that he has declared all his assets to Guyana’s Integrity Commission. He denied any misuse of his office for personal gain.

Ramkarran criticized the Integrity Commission, describing it as ineffective due to its secretive nature and lack of investigative authority. He supported a draft amendment proposed by the minority parliamentary opposition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), which aims to require summaries of asset filings from the president, ministers, and other high-ranking officials.

While acknowledging that politicians can acquire assets during their tenure, Ramkarran stressed the importance of implementing adequate measures to ensure transparency. In a related development, President Ali released videos featuring young poultry farmers who have partnered with the government to establish a modern poultry project, showcasing the initiative’s focus on youth and female participation in agriculture.

Additionally, the president addressed claims regarding electricity supply to his farm, asserting that infrastructure improvements are underway for residents in Long Creek, including the installation of utility poles to facilitate future electricity access.
