Rubio Renews Pressure on Cuba, Calls for Reforms and Release of Political Prisoners

Half a decade on from the historical anti-government protests of July 11, 2021, in Cuba, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has rekindled Washington’s critique of the Cuban government. Rubio has reiterated the need for immediate liberation of political prisoners and emphasized that the Cuban people are deserving of a better future.

The 2021 protests saw thousands of Cubans taking to the streets, demanding enhanced freedoms, economic opportunities, and political shifts after enduring years of repression and economic mismanagement. The Cuban government was accused of responding harshly to these peaceful protests, allegedly leading to thousands of arrests.

Rubio alleged that hundreds of protesters, detained during the demonstrations, continue to languish in prisons. He insisted that the Trump administration remains committed to supporting the Cuban populace, while exerting diplomatic and economic pressure on Havana.

The U.S. Secretary of State painted a grim picture of Cuba’s economy, highlighting persistent blackouts, food shortages, and economic difficulties. He advocated for significant political and economic reforms as prerequisites for the improvement of living conditions and restoration of relations with the U.S.

Accusations were also leveled against the Cuban government for maintaining close relations with governments and organizations perceived by Washington as hostile to U.S. interests. Rubio warned that the U.S. would persist in utilizing all available tools to address national security concerns, while promoting reforms in Cuba. Despite the U.S.’s depiction of the protests as a call for democracy and basic freedoms, Cuban authorities maintain that the unrest was instigated by long-standing U.S. sanctions and outside interference.
