The ongoing trial regarding allegations of election fraud related to the 2020 elections in Guyana has been postponed until September due to issues with witnesses. This week, the prosecution faced significant setbacks that hindered the progress of the trial. On Wednesday, the prosecution was unable to call a scheduled witness due to an emergency, leading to the court’s decision to adjourn the case for several months.
During the proceedings, prosecutor Darshan Ramdhani informed Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty that the witness was unavailable, and no alternative witnesses were available to continue the case. This situation resulted in the court having no evidence to consider on that day, prompting the adjournment.
The week had already been challenging for the prosecution, as the trial had been interrupted earlier on Monday. Former Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Information Technology Head Aneal Giddings was expected to testify for the State. However, he was reportedly outside of Guyana, and arrangements were made for him to appear virtually. This plan was contested by defense attorney Nigel Hughes, who argued that Giddings should testify in person to ensure the integrity of the cross-examination process.
Discussions in court aimed to find a replacement witness, but no immediate options were available, resulting in a stall in proceedings. Consequently, the trial, which was anticipated to advance the prosecution’s case, concluded the week with minimal progress.
The trial addresses allegations of fraud concerning the tabulation and declaration of the March 2020 General and Regional Elections, which led to a prolonged period of political uncertainty in Guyana. The accused include former Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield, former Deputy Chief Elections Officer Roxanne Myers, and several others, all of whom face multiple charges, including conspiracy to defraud and misconduct in public office. All defendants have pleaded not guilty and are currently on bail.
