Guyana: Cuban National Found Deceased; Police Constable in Custody

The disappearance of 26-year-old Cuban national Dailen Paneque Gómez has transitioned into a murder investigation after her decomposed body was found along the East Coast of Demerara. A police constable is currently in custody as investigators look into an alleged confession regarding the incident.

Gómez, who resided in Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, was reported missing after she was last seen in the early hours of Thursday, June 18, reportedly on her way to work. Her disappearance prompted a police search, leading detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters to locate her remains in a clump of bushes along the East Coast at approximately 7:50 p.m. on Wednesday.

This discovery has shifted the focus of the case from a missing person report to a murder investigation. Police have detained Constable Randy Thomas as the inquiry deepens. Sources indicate that Thomas allegedly informed investigators that on the day Gómez disappeared, they traveled together in his vehicle to the Enmore Backdam area. Reports suggest that a heated exchange occurred between the two, escalating into a confrontation.

According to sources, Thomas claimed that Gómez attacked him during the argument. He allegedly stated that he was armed with an illegal firearm and, during the altercation, discharged a shot that struck Gómez in the head. It is reported that he mentioned using a teddy bear to muffle the sound of the weapon when the shot was fired.

Further information suggests that after the incident, Thomas attempted to conceal the crime by binding Gómez’s body with rope and moving it into nearby bushes. Sources claim that he purchased the rope earlier that same day from a Chinese supermarket in Mahaica. After leaving the scene, Thomas reportedly returned home, where he attempted to clean the interior of his vehicle with hand sanitizer.

The Guyana Police Force has confirmed that Gómez’s body was found during ongoing investigations and that a police constable is in custody as the probe continues. An official report is anticipated as the investigation progresses.
