Guyana: Ekaa Hrim Addresses Labor Abuse Allegations

Ekaa Hrim Earth Resources Management has publicly responded to allegations of labor exploitation and human rights violations involving 38 Indian nationals at its quarry in Batavia, Region Seven. During a media briefing, company representative Carl Methuvel rejected the claims, describing them as false and damaging to the company’s reputation.

The company presented documentation to demonstrate compliance with Guyana’s financial regulations, including records of monthly payments to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the National Insurance Scheme (NIS). Methuvel stated, “Ekaa Hrim has continued to make all statutory remittances to the Guyana Revenue Authority and the National Insurance Scheme in strict accordance with our corporate obligations.” He emphasized that the workers were integrated into the legal payroll system and received benefits under Guyanese law.

In response to complaints about living conditions and dietary needs, Ekaa Hrim claimed to have imported specialized culinary staff from India to cater to the dietary preferences of the workers. The company engaged a professional chef to run the kitchen and planned menus in consultation with the employees to accommodate their specific tastes and religious dietary restrictions. Methuvel stated that fresh rations were provided daily at no cost to the workforce.

Regarding allegations of human trafficking and forced confinement, Methuvel asserted that all employees were engaged under voluntary contracts and were free to leave the site at any time. He called the allegations “deeply irresponsible” and an affront to the dignity of the employees.

Despite the company’s defense and documentation, government regulators are continuing their investigation into the employment contracts and reported salary deductions. Ekaa Hrim executives have expressed their commitment to cooperate with state authorities, believing that a fair audit will clear the company of wrongdoing.
