Guyana: Duncan Raises Concerns Over Kwakwani Trail Conditions Amid Infrastructure Spending

Opposition Member of Parliament Sherod Duncan has raised concerns about the condition of the Kwakwani Trail in Region 10, noting that the state of the more than 60-mile corridor is difficult to justify given the substantial financial resources being allocated to roads, bridges, and transport infrastructure in Guyana.

Following a visit to the area, Duncan reported that residents, drivers, commuters, and business operators have voiced complaints regarding the deteriorating road conditions, inadequate maintenance, and insufficient preparation for the rainy season. He emphasized that the trail’s condition contrasts sharply with the scale of public spending directed toward national infrastructure.

“A trillion-dollar economy should not have roads that look forgotten,” Duncan stated. He observed that the issues became evident while traveling along the Kwakwani Trail, where residents rely on a road they believe has been neglected for an extended period. Despite the natural beauty of the region and the friendliness of its inhabitants, the trail remains a challenging and costly transportation route for regular users.

Duncan pointed out that the road is particularly significant as Region 10 contributes to Guyana’s economic output, yet communities along the corridor continue to experience conditions that hinder mobility, business activities, and daily life. He highlighted Budget 2026, which allocates $196.1 billion for roads, bridges, and highways, and noted that $354.2 billion, or 22.7 percent of the national fiscal plan, is designated for connectivity and transport infrastructure. Additionally, he mentioned that approximately $779 billion has been earmarked for capital development nationwide.

However, Duncan contended that residents along the Kwakwani Trail have yet to experience the benefits of these substantial allocations. He argued that poor road conditions lead to increased travel times, higher transportation costs, and a diminished quality of life for those who depend on the corridor for education, employment, business, and access to services.

He is urging the government to ensure that appropriate materials are utilized for the trail and that maintenance is conducted proactively, particularly before conditions worsen. Duncan stressed that infrastructure development should not only be announced in Georgetown but should also be tangible in communities like Kwakwani. He raised broader questions about whether public infrastructure spending is equitably reaching communities outside the capital in a practical manner.
